Dallas Fed Conference to Examine Future of Border Economy

Security concerns and global competition are among factors currently challenging the historically robust job growth along the U.S.-Mexican border.

A group of noted experts in border issues will discuss what lies ahead for the border economy at a December 3, 2004, conference sponsored by the El Paso and San Antonio branches of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. The conference is hosted in cooperation with the University of Texas at Brownsville.

“Framing the Future: Tomorrow’s Border Economy” will be held at the Marriott Hotel, 1600 Airway Blvd., El Paso. Participants can register to attend the conference at www.dallasfed.org.

Experts will focus on today’s most critical border issues and discuss what current events—including increased education spending—could mean to the region's economic growth for this decade and beyond.

The keynote speaker will be Kristin Forbes of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers.

Speakers also will include P.T. Wright, Department of Homeland Security; Garrick Taylor, Border Trade Alliance; Alejandro Díaz-Bautista, Colegio de la Frontera Norte; Javier Sánchez Reaza, Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas; and Serge Coulombe, University of Ottawa.

Additional information about the conference and a list of confirmed speakers can be found on the Dallas Fed website: www.dallasfed.org.
